Day 5

Subject: [firstname]: What’s in it for me?

Hey [firstname]!

One key trait of all good leaders is the ability to get others to co-operate. They get people to willingly do what they want. After all: how can you be a leader without followers? Oftentimes they get people to follow them without those people realizing they’re actually following an instruction.

The truth is: People WON’T do something just because you say so!

It all comes down to motivation – you need to get other people to share your enthusiasm for the task at hand. In fact, I’d go as far as to say that motivation is the most important (and difficult) task any leader can face.

Motivation comes down to one simple question: What's in it for me? THAT’S the question you must answer to get people to follow you.

There are many answers to that question. It could be because you’re paying them – although (contrary to popular belief) money alone ISN’T always the best motivator.

A much better motivator is: It makes them feel good. That could be because following you enhances their social standing and makes them look and feel superior. Alternatively, what you want ties in to their moral values and they get a nice, warm feeling inside from doing the right thing.

The best motivator by a long chalk is: Following you gives them as sense of accomplishment. When people feel they OWN the result and outcome, they’re going to be much more willing to follow your wishes. After all, they’re stakeholders in the result.

That’s why all good leaders are good delegators. When you involve others you’re automatically sharing the outcome.

Whatever motivator you use, remember it's always about them, never about you.
